2019 Conference Theme

“Partnership and Innovation: The Silk Road towards a Sustainable Energy Future”

The 2019 IPTC Executive Committee selected the theme “Partnership and Innovation: The Silk Road towards a Sustainable Energy Future” from a list of over 40 suggestions. The theme's mention of the historic Silk Road refers to the 7th century when world-changing technological advances made in China, such as the invention of porcelain, gunpowder, paper and printing characters, were passed to Arab-Muslim societies along the land and sea routes used in the silk trade. The theme provides a geographical and historical focus, while firmly looking forward, as industry leaders and professionals gather together in Beijing in 2019.

The partnership between CNPC and Saudi Aramco for 2019 IPTC continues the progression of this historical concept. Strategic and tactical partnerships, when properly constructed, can overcome significant technical and commercial challenges. Innovation has changed the shape of our industry in many areas, and IPTC 2019 will showcase the newest innovations in a multi-disciplinary context. The question of sustainability, given the extractive nature of the energy sector, is a topic that will see increased attention in coming years.

Regional energy ministers, industry leaders and governmental representatives will have an opportunity to discuss and share their views on timely industry topics and trends, exchange expertise and experience, present state-of-the-art technology and innovation, and to stimulate further research of technical and business activities. In addition, awards and recognition wil be given for organisations efforts in technical and business contributions to the industry. There will also be a range of integrated social activities to encourage networking and off-line discussion.

IPTC History and Background

Founded in 2005, the International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) is the flagship multidisciplinary technical event in the Eastern Hemisphere. IPTC is held annually and rotates between Doha, Qatar and venues in the Asia Pacific region. The scope of the conference programme and associated industry activities will address technology and relevant industry issues that challenge industry specialists and management around the world.

IPTC is sponsored by four industry organisations and societies, the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG); the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE); the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG); and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). The synergy of these four leading, individual-member driven societies provides the most comprehensive opportunity to form multi-disciplinary committees and an outstanding technical programme.

IPTC is focused on the dissemination of new and current technology, best practices and multi-disciplinary activities designed to emphasise the importance of the value chain and maximising asset value. The knowledge, capabilities and strengths of the participating countries and the sponsoring societies global membership, over the spectrum of multi-disciplinary technologies, are central to the success of the conference and the corresponding exhibition.

IPTC is governed by a Board of Directors made up of eight representatives from IPTCs four organising societies.

Mission Statement

The IPTC's aim is to promote, aid and encourage technology dissemination and collaboration amongst the multiple disciplines of the petroleum industry.
