PANEL SESSION: THE FUTURE OF EXPLORATION: MAKING DISCOVERIES IN AN INCREASINGLY MATURE RESOURCE BASE

Worldwide discoveries of new oil and gas resources have been in decline for over 30 years. This declining trend raises a key question for world energy markets: Is the decrease in discoveries an inevitable consequence of the increasing maturity of the global resource base, or can industry and governments work together to reverse this trend? Factors that may be important to improving the future of exploration include:

  1. Access to new areas with high potential for discoveries
  2. Development of new technology that can lead to new discoveries or reduce exploration costs
  3. Implementation of new work processes that increase the creativity and productivity of explorationists
  4. Access to additional capital for exploration investments
  5. New relationships between governments and industry in the pursuit and development of discoveries.

Both national and international oil companies place a high priority on exploration success. In many areas, the manner and degree of cooperation between these entities may be a key determinant of the outcome.

PANEL SESSION: RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT

The development and application of new technologies has been a key driver for increased global oil and gas reserves.  Looking to the future, technology advances will be needed more than ever as new resources become increasingly difficult to discover, existing fields mature, and demand for hydrocarbons increases.  However, research and development funding from industry, university, and government sources has substantially decreased over the past 20 years as a result of shrinking budgets and industry consolidation.  Also, as compared to other technology-driven industries, the deployment of technology in the oil and gas industry occurs at a much slower pace.  This panel will focus on recommendations for increasing the pace of technology deployment and the impact of future research and development investment in our industry.
