Major Energy Conference To Be Sited in Kuala Lumpur for First Time
Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (6 September 2007) - In December 2008, Kuala Lumpur will proudly host the International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC). Approximately 3,000 participants from around the globe are expected to attend the meeting, to be held 3‑5 December 2008 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre. A flagship event in the Eastern Hemisphere, IPTC rotates between the Middle East and Asia. The inaugural event was held in 2005 in Doha, Qatar, and the second edition will be held in December 2007, in Dubai, UAE. The Kuala Lumpur event will be the first IPTC Conference to be held in Asia Pacific.
IPTC is a collaborative effort among the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the European Association of Geoscientists and Engineers (EAGE), the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). The synergy of these four, leading professional societies results in the most comprehensive, multi‑disciplinary technical programme among oil and gas conferences.
In line with the conference theme - ”Meeting the Energy Needs of a Growing World Economy,” 2008 IPTC will provide an unprecedented opportunity for energy professionals to address how to meet the increasing demand for reliable and sufficient energy. More than 150 sponsor-society members, representing 25 countries and 86 companies will plan the conference programme. The programme and related activities will address technical and business issues that challenge oil and gas professionals operating in all parts of the world, particularly in the gas business, and certain overarching issues such as health, safety, and environment; security; human relations; and training.
Malaysia’s National Petroleum Corporation PETRONAS is the official Host Organisation for this important and prestigious event. Tan Sri Dato Sri Mohd Hassan Marican, President and Chief Executive, PETRONAS, and Mark W. Albers, Senior Vice President, Exxon Mobil Corporation, are Co‑Chairmen of the IPTC Executive Committee. The Conference Programme Committee Co‑Chairmen are Datuk Abdullah Karim, Vice President of PETRONAS and MD/CEO of PETRONAS Carigali Sdn. Bhd.; Liam M. Mallon, Chairman, ExxonMobil Subsidiaries in Malaysia; and Nabeel Al Afaleg, Acting Manager, Exploration and Petroleum Engineering Advanced Research Centre, Saudi Aramco. The conference is currently seeking the endorsement of industry-related associations and organisations from around the globe to support its overall mission and objectives and to actively promote participation through their membership.
The panel discussions will address a broad range of topics and issues including the following:
- Sustaining Production Rates to Meet the Future Demand
- Partnerships and Complex Relationships
- High Price! High Cost! High Stakes?
- Climate Change and Environment
- E&P Technologies
The call for papers is now open and abstract submission is available online through the 2008 IPTC website at www.iptcnet.org/2008. The abstract submission deadline is 4 February 2008.
An awards banquet will be held on 3 December 2008 to honour “Excellence in Project Integration” recipients. The awards recognise project teams that have made significant and unique achievements in managing and directing an integrated oil or gas project from discovery to delivery. Companies, governmental agencies, education and research institutes, and professional or technical organisations are eligible for the awards competition.
In addition to the technical programme, 2008 IPTC provides an opportunity for young professionals (YP’s) to meet with their peers and senior industry executives to address issues of importance to them. Pertinent issues relating to the YP’s working in the industry will be addressed at the workshop. Presentations from industry professionals, coupled with structured discussions will form the format of the workshop with an opportunity for informal networking with other YP’s and panelists.
With a global industry demand for qualified professionals, the Education Week Committee will select up to 50-60 international university students to attend the conference and exhibition during the week. The objectives are to allow them to work together on a joint technical project and provide an opportunity to form new friendships, extend their network, and interact with a number of major industry employers.
Another important feature of the conference is Education Day which is an initiative to introduce high school students to the industry in general. Selected students will be invited to attend the conference and exhibition on 4 and 5 December 2008. The students will also benefit from listening to presentations from industry professionals. Students will see first hand the high end technology and sophisticated software used and gain a better understanding of the industry and their role in the broader community.
An exhibition will be held in conjunction with the conference where organisations will have the opportunity to showcase their products and services to senior management. 2008 IPTC will have a novel additional feature – the Energy Conservation & Climate Change Pavilion. This will provide exhibiting companies with a conducive environment in which to showcase state‑of‑the‑art emerging and renewable technologies. These will include Biofuel Energy, Biomass Energy, Palm Diesel/Palm Oil as a Diesel Substitute and Emission Clean-Up Technology to name but a few. In addition to the exhibition, 2008 IPTC presents companies with a wealth of sponsorship opportunities to enhance their presence during the conference.
