Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia (5 September 2008) - In December, Kuala Lumpur will host the International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC). More than 4,000 oil and gas professionals from around the globe are expected to attend the meeting, to be held 3-5 December 2008 at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre.

IPTC is a collaboration among the American Association of Petroleum Geologists (AAPG), the European Association of Geoscientists & Engineers (EAGE), the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG), and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). A flagship event in the Eastern Hemisphere, IPTC rotates between the Middle East and Asia. The inaugural event was held in 2005 in Doha, Qatar, and the second edition was held in December 2007, in Dubai, U.A.E. The Kuala Lumpur event will be the first IPTC to be held in Asia Pacific.

The 2008 programme was selected from more than 1,000 presentation proposals representing 230 organisations from over 80 countries. After a two-day review, the Technical Programme Committee selected the final programme of 380 proposals, representing 100 organisations from 35 countries, to be presented in 51 technical sessions and a poster session.

Key programme topics include seismic operations, heavy oil, EOR, well construction, sand control, flow assurance, LNG, gas technology and unconventional gas. Over-arching challenges include HSE, social responsibility, human resources and business environment.

The opening ceremony will feature the Prime Minister of Malaysia, Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, as well as the 2008 IPTC Executive Committee Co-Chairmen Tan Sri Dato’ Seri Mohd Hassan Marican, President and Chief Executive of PETRONAS and Mark W. Albers, Senior Vice President of Exxon Mobil Corporation.

In line with the conference theme, “Meeting the Energy Needs of a Growing World Economy,” the topics of plenary and panel sessions will reflect the demand for sufficient reliable energy, and address such issues as climate change, cost issues, and meeting future demand. Other events will feature special programmes for students and young professionals. The conference will also host an exhibition with more than 4,000 net square metres of exhibit space.

Focusing on exploration, production, reservoir, midstream gas, and over-arching industry issues, the International Petroleum Technology Conference (IPTC) brings together the perspectives of multiple disciplines including petroleum engineering, geology, and geophysics.
