0700–0830 hours

Ibrahim B. Ibrahim, Economic Advisor at the Diwan; Secretary General, General Secretariat for Development Planning, Qatar

Each country in the energy supply chain has its own economic and societal challenges that must be managed in order to support sustainable growth. Economies based on the most sound fundamentals will be best placed to survive the current global turmoil, and the best structured will eventually emerge even stronger.

This look at how current and projected market and world economic trends impact the oil and gas industry will be a must-see event.

The speaker will have a high-profile opportunity, interacting with an audience of key industry leaders, to focus on the pillars of economic success for the oil and gas industry, highlighting the interdependency with other economic sectors and the need for closer and more transparent integration.

Topical Luncheon: Coping WithThe New Price Environment

1215–1345 hours

Speaker: Yves-Louis Darricarrère, President Exploration and Production, Total; 2009 IPTC Executive Committee Co-Chairman

Many analysts have focused on the reduction in demand due to the economic crisis and on the resulting excess production capacity. However, problems will also emerge if demand begins to recover quickly and supply fails to respond at the same pace. Many new projects have been recently delayed around the world. As our industry is one of long lead times, delays in decision making today will result in production shortages tomorrow. The risk could be the shortfall of several million barrels per day around 2015, well below the threshold of 100 million barrels per day of global production potential. This is why Total’s strategy remains unchanged, and is based on a mid to long term view.

But our industry must take into account the new reality and needs to re-establish the right balance between price, cost and profit sharing. The costs which increased dramatically between 2005 and 2008, must now reflect the new environment. All parties involved have a role to play in this effort - contractors, oil companies, and national authorities. Total has a very active approach to this issue, both in operating and in investment costs.

Investment and sustainable development are two critical topics in the present circumstances. Total and several of its peers have made a clear commitment to maintaining their investments. All players in our industry have to shoulder the collective responsibility of supplying hydrocarbons to our customers. Current events show that Majors, which are able to maintain their activity even through highs and lows, have a very efficient role to play.  The classic trio of technology, project management and financing, supported by a clear commitment towards sustainable development will remain Majors’ strength. It must be especially reflected in their ability to continuously reinforce their expertise and to prepare the next generation for even more challenging future developments.
