Look Beneath the Surface: Geoscientists and the Future of Carbon Capture

1400-1530 hours
Wednesday, 19 February 2025

Distinguished Lecturer:
Jennifer M. Erich
Bengaluru Technology Geoscience Manager
ExxonMobil India

Session Description

By leveraging our existing specialised skills in the oil and gas industry, our deep knowledge of the complexity of the subsurface, geoscientists are leading the way to identify and characterise Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) opportunities around the world.  CCS is an important technology, but not a brand-new concept, aiming to reduce atmospheric CO2 levels by capturing emissions from industrial sources and securely storing them underground. ExxonMobil has been a leader in CCS, as we have been sequestering carbon for decades.  Geoscientists play a pivotal role in the successful implementation of CCS techniques, leveraging our expertise in petrophysics, geologic modelling, risk assessments and monitoring to maximise the effectiveness and safety of these processes.

About the Distinguished Lecturer

Jennifer M. Erich

Jennifer M. Erich is currently leading the Geoscience team at the Bengaluru Technology Center in India.  She has over 25 years of experience in the energy industry.

Jennifer joined the newly merged ExxonMobil in early 2000 with a BSc and MSc. in Geology from the University of Iowa.   Her initial roles in the company were specialized in the fields of Petrophysics and Operations Geology.  She held leadership roles across Exploration, Development and Production assets and has experience in emerging Unconventional plays.  In 2019, Jennifer helped lead a major reorganization and culture change effort for the entire Upstream business lines as the Upstream Culture Manager before moving with her family to India to help establish the Geoscience team in 2021.  She is a recipient of the Ally Energy GRIT Award in 2021 and in her spare time, a commissioned artist.
