The goal of this course is to investigate the ways that methods used to prospect for and develop oil and gas reservoirs are being employed in geothermal. The course will cover the following topics:

• 3G (Geology, Geochemistry, Geophysics) plus Geothermal Exploration
• Overview of the system related to volcanism vs sedimentary basin
• Hydrocarbon to heat, how to get the right strategy to the right target
• Decarbonization of the petroleum industry by additional geothermal in the Front End Engineering Design (FEED), is it possible?
• Challenge and Opportunity for Geothermal positions coupling with the petroleum industry

Risk Assessment of CO2 Storage by Understanding Coupled Thermo-Hydro-Chemical-Mechanical Processes

In this course we will explain coupled phenomena in terms of i) reservoir conformance and ii) storage integrity by discussing the principles of coupled processes affected mainly by changes in pressure (effective stress), temperature and geochemistry in subsurface storage and sealing formations. These changes will affect flow and transport as well as geomechanical stability and impact the long-term predictability of conformance and containment.
 

Physics and Data Driven Seismic Data Analysis: A Narrative of Two Approaches

Like any other industry, seismic industry is abuzz with the resurgence of artificial intelligence and machine learning. Is this just a fashionable thing to do? Can we expect to revolutionise the seismic data processing and interpretation steps? The goal of this course is to take a step-by-step approach to explain the physics, signal processing and ML based approaches in seismic data analysis. The focus is not on the theoretical principles but only the applicability and usefulness of these approaches. Examples from basic data conditioning and NMO to velocity estimation, QSI and automated interpretation, will be used to demonstrate the current status and future directions.
 

Energy Transition and Sustainability for Oil & Gas and Non-Petroleum Professionals

While oil and gas will represent a major part of the energy mix in the future, energy systems will include a significantly larger share of renewables, and low/zero carbon fuels in addition to different initiatives relating to the sustainability aspects such as leveraging carbon capture, utilization and storage to enable sustainable energy supply. Energy efficiency from asset operations and advanced technologies for emissions (and specially methane) reductions will play a key role in lowering carbon footprint, and form key pillars of the value chain to achieve the Net Zero, help to bring resilience for a sustainable future.

The seminar will provide insights and case examples, focusing on opportunities identification, integration and management in areas such as CCUS, hydrogen/ammonia/methanol projects consideration, and deployment for effective end-to-end value creation.
