Ask the Expert Session: Successful Projects

Tuesday, 13 February  |  16:00–17:00  |  Session Duration: 60 minutes  |  Location: Hall 1

Project 1

The world’s first gas production trial from a subsea gas hydrate deposit - Integration of science and deepwater operations.

Speaker: Koji Yamamoto, Project lead, Vice President, JOGMEC

To verify production technologies for subsea gas hydrates, which are unconventional natural gases in solid form, JOGMEC conducted a series of DST-type offshore production tests using MODU in Japanese waters with many scientists and petroleum technology operators. To obtain scientific data, the project was associated with intensive data and sample acquisition programs and brand-new oil production technologies that supported deepwater operations. An integrated approach of science, technology, and public and private sectors led to the success of the project.

NESR CO2 Injection: Unique Design as a Technology Breakthrough to PERTAMINA CCUS Milestone in Indonesia (3 Successful Injection Projects in 2022-2023)

Speaker: Suha Saad Alsaif, Sustainability Director, NESR

As an enabler to speed up the implementation of CCUS in Indonesia, PERTAMINA (Indonesia’s National Oil Company) initiated several CO2 injection Projects within the 2022-2023 period. This technology implementation not only aims to assess CO2 storage in subsurface conditions but also to enhance field production through CO2 Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) application.

NESR has been chosen as the technology provider for this first PERTAMINA CO2 injection campaign in Indonesia. The methodology and execution are unique and involve fit-for-purpose design to achieve the objectives and mitigate CO2 injection challenges that are distinct based on subsurface characteristics.

Up to 500 Tons of CO2 per well were successfully injected in 3 wells, achieving the expected result that is valuable for well productivity, subsurface study, and operational Lessons learned as well as stimulating the CCUS project's growth and commitments in other areas within Indonesia.
